Kicking Ass and Taking Names; the 2010 UConn Lady Huskies Basketball Team

"Woman must not accept; she must challenge." ~ Margaret Sanger

When was the last time you did something correctly 89 consecutive times?

Well, besides showering without falling over. That might be something one takes for granted.

I'm talking something that takes speed, strength, dexterity, determination, drive to win.....89 times in a row and succeeding every single time?

The University of Connecticut Women's Basketball team goes for their 89th straight victory tonight, breaking the previous record set by the UCLA Men's Basketball team from 1971-1973.

Some facts about the 88 wins in Lady Huskies' streak:
  • They last lost in April 2008.
  • They beat their opponents by an average of 33 points.
  • This is their second winning streak of longer than 70 games.
  • In only two of those games, did their opponents get to within 10 points or less.
  • They beat the #2 ranked team five times.
Folks, that's not even in the same category as domination.

Playing high school and college sports, I grew up a daughter of Title IX, the landmark law enacted in 1972. It states "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." There are still people in this country who have a problem with Title IX, that it takes attention from the more "important" things, like revenue streams of college football. Sadly, this doesn't surprise me. Plus, it gives me a little satisfaction to be able to say "Tough. Eff You."

Longtime UConn Women's Basketball Head Coach Geno Auriemma told reporters on Sunday that attention would be non-existent if the Lady Huskies were breaking a record held by women. "Because we're breaking a men's record, we've got a lot of people paying attention," Auriemma said. "If we were breaking a women's record, everybody would go 'Aren't those girls nice, let's give them two paragraphs in USA Today, you know, give them one line of the bottom of ESPN and then let's send them back to where they belong, in the kitchen.'"

Geno is abrasive and never afraid to speak his mind. He's also 100% right.

UConn is up 25 points at half over 20th ranked Florida State.

You go Lady Huskies; kick some ass, and kick those "women belong in the kitchen" notions back to 1972.

I like being in the kitchen, but I'll be damned if someone were to tell me that is where I belong.

P.S. Go Huskies! ;)
